Steve Smith retired following a successful 20-year banking career and founded a homeless non-profit company; New Beginnings of Central Florida in 2007. Over the past 10 years, he was able to acquire numerous housing facilities to serve the homeless, seniors and disabled Veterans. Smith was awarded federal funds from NSP 1 and 3, along with State ESP funding and Challenge grants in addition to county SHIP funds. In 2016, he was awarded $750,000 from Florida Housing Finance Corporation to purchase land to develop 96 workforce housing for former homeless families in Clermont, Florida. In 2017, Smith partnered with Blue Sky Communities and Florida Housing Finance Corporation awarded millions of dollars to build Woodwinds; a 96-unit housing community. In 2018, Smith partnered with BSC and awarded funds from Florida Housing Finance Corporation to create 70 affordable rentals for seniors. Smith has served for several years on the Lake County Housing Board and Mid-Florida Homeless Coalition. In 2012, he was appointed, by the Governor of Florida, to serve on the Council of Homelessness. He continues to serve on these 3 Boards as he strives to help create best practices for developing much needed housing.
